Are we dealing with the same shoes as last year? That’s basically what you might think at first glance. The Asics Gel Pulse 13 was launched without much fanfare and features the main points of the Pulse 12.

First, let’s highlight that the Gel Pulse is one of the most popular shoes in the Asics series due to its very affordable price and good comfort. Of course, it is not the most “stylish” shoe of the Japanese brand, but it has its highlights.

This article will review the highlights and shortcomings of these running shoes to help you decide if it’s right for you. Let’s go!

Cushioning

We wouldn’t call it thin, but we have to admit that it’s not thick either: the sole has 23 mm of stack height under the heel and 13 mm under the forefoot (drop of 10 mm). However, these are the official data from ASICS. In practice, the insole increases the overall stack. Therefore, we are closer to 28-30 mm.

Ultimately, what’s important is the comfort of the shoes. In this case, the testers note that the underfoot feel is while running is pleasant. The shoe absorbs impacts well for a cushioned and relatively soft yet responsive stride.

These running shoes use an entry-level technology: Amplifoam. It’s a relatively basic material. However, it does the job and testers note that the cushion it offers lasts over time to maintain durability.

More “premium,” we find a GEL unit that also helps to ensure good comfort, especially when the foot hits the ground.

In short, nothing revolutionary, but even at this price, we still find the know-how of Asics in this practical and straightforward configuration.

Foot lockdown (upper)

Next, let’s take a look at the upper. Again, there are few changes compared to the Gel Pulse 12. The upper is an engineered jacquard mesh to improve breathability and keep your feet cool. However, even with this, it’s important to note that the mesh is relatively thick. As a result, things can literally heat out quickly in the summer, especially if you live in a hot region. As you can see in the picture, the collar at the ankle is also quite padded.

The foot lockdown is very good with a forgiving fit. Also, it has enough room for the forefoot in the toe box. Asics rarely offers ill-fitting shoes, and they prove it again with the Pulse 13.

The internal heel counter is moderately soft. Asics removed the hard shell from the first versions, and, frankly, nobody misses it!

Let’s move on to the design: unrefined and purely functional; it may not be to everyone’s taste. Some Asics customers have even sent back their shoes because of this… Don’t say that we didn’t warn you!

Finally, a last note on the weight: the shoe still weighs 10.6 oz/300 g (men’s model). It loses a few grams but remains objectively a bit heavy. Unfortunately, it’s often the case with entry-level shoes with less innovative design and materials.

Grip and durability

Herein lies the main question mark for the Asics Gel Pulse 13: its rubber. It seems that Asics decided to go for a generic material instead of relying once again on its famous AHAR (a very durable carbon rubber).

We can imagine that it may be a question of cost for the brand. As for us, runners/customers, we’ll have to see what’s the concrete impact on the durability of the shoe. Also, the part under the midfoot has no rubber, Amplifoam is exposed, without protection.

Nevertheless, the testers did not note any early wear for now. We will have to see how it evolves after 150 mi and beyond.

Finally, runners appreciated the good traction of the shoe. It grips the road well, even in the rain.

The Ride

Let’s face it. The Asics Gel Pulse 13 is not a racing shoe. It’s a relatively versatile shoe that’s primarily suitable for everyday training.

Without being dull, the bounce of these shoes is limited, which can make them pushy for interval or fartlek training. However, their good comfort and overall smooth stride make them a good companion for your long runs.

Overall, you can see the Asics Gel Pulse 13 as good affordable shoes for beginners. For more experienced athletes, it can be a good choice as a complementary shoe to rotate with your models

Conclusion

The Asics Gel Pulse 13 is pretty much identical to version 12, minus the AHAR rubber (unfortunately).

It’s still a good, durable, and affordable shoe for daily training. A safe, and budget-friendly choice that packs a lot value!
