In A Black Veil For Lisa, John Mills (Ryan�s Daughter) is Franz Bulon, a police inspector intent on bringing down a major drug ring operating in Hamburg. Thwarted at every turn by an assassin who is systematically killing informants, jealous of his beautiful, younger wife Lisa (Luciana Paluzzi, Thunderball) and suspecting her of having an affair (is it real or imagined?), Bulon can scarcely focus on his work.

With jealousy nearing the boiling point, Bulon hires Alex (Robert Hoffman, The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe), the assassin he's arrested for the recent informant murders, to kill his wife. With nods to both Alfred Hitchcock (Vertigo) and Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique), the film builds on the suspense from scene to tension-filled scene.

Directed by Massimo Dallamano (Dorian Gray director and the cinematographer of Sergio Leone�s A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More), A Black Veil For Lisa co-stars Tulio Altamura (Blood For A Silver Dollar), Carlo Hinterman (Women Of Devil�s Island) and Enzo Fiermonte (Grand Prix).

The Film:

Cult director Massimo Dallamano made this surprisingly tedious thriller about a murder-for-hire plot. Lisa (Luciana Paluzzi) is the trampy wife of a jealous detective named Franz (John Mills), who has underworld connections from his job on the narcotics squad. Lisa's shady background and promiscuous habits drive Franz to a homicidal rage, so he hires a hitman (Robert Hoffmann) to murder her. As so often is the case in films about hired killers, the hitman falls in love with Lisa and helps her to double-cross Franz. Predictable and dull, this standard genre effort is below Dallamano's usual standards, and it features a dreadful musical score by Giovanni Fusco which only adds to the disappointment.

When a narcotics detective finds out that his beautiful wife (who is an ex-criminal) is cheating on him, he hires a professional hitman to bump her off. However, things don't go quite according to plan. The detective was involved in investigating a string of drug-related murders, and when he finally catches the killer Max Lindt, instead of arresting him, he surprises him by asking him to murder his unfaithful wife. Instead of killing the woman, the hitman ends up sleeping with her, and they begin an affair.

The single-layered Olive Blu-ray of A Black Veil For Lisa looks good 1080P. It is transferred with a high bitrate and the image is probably a notch above what I was expecting. It is in the, slightly bastardized, 1.78:1 aspect ratio. There is some texture, depth, authentic colors, pleasing detail (in close-ups) and only a few minor speckles. Not a substantial HD image put nothing to complain about. This Blu-ray gave me a consistent an watchable presentation.

Audio :

Olive use a DTS-HD Master 2.0 channel track at 1857 kbps (24-bit) in the English language. The post-DUB'ing wasn't distracting and the film's effects export modest depth. The score is credited to both Giovanni Fusco (L'Avventura, The Red Desert, L'Eclisse, Hiroshima Mon Amour, Il Grido) and Gianfranco Reverberi (Venus in Furs) It adds suspense and some Giallo flavor to the atmosphere. There are no subtitles offered and my Oppo has identified it as being a region 'A'-locked.

BOTTOM LINE: I had never seen A Black Veil For Lisa but was keen as it is a bona-fide Giallo on our listing HERE. It's heavy in the genre's typical style with many close-ups, jarring edits and a shade erotic with one of my favorites; Luciana Paluzzi (love this beauty in The Green Slime and Thunderball, The Italian Connection). A Black Veil for Lisa has a very desirable premise - with elements of jealousy, paranoia, infidelity, corruption, murder... I enjoyed it! The bare-bones Olive

Blu-ray seems the only way to see this thriller in 1080P. Some extras would have augmented the package but since it's been out for a while the price is more in-line and Giallo fans, and genre completists, should nab this one. Go for it!
