สำนวน คือคำหรือวลีที่ใช้แสดงความรู้สึกในบทสนทนา อย่างคนไทยเราก็มีการใช้สำนวนคำพังเพยต่างๆ มาประกอบการพูดคุยเพื่อเน้นย้ำ หรือสร้างสีสันให้บทสนทนา

ส่วนทางฝั่งฝรั่งก็มีสำนวนเหล่านี้เหมือนกัน และต่อไปนี้คือสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษ ที่จะช่วยให้บทสนทนามีประสิทธิภาพยิ่งขึ้น

1. A bitter pill

ความหมาย สถานการณ์หรือข้อมูลที่ไม่ค่อยพึงพอใจเท่าไหร่ แต่ก็ต้องจำใจยอมรับ

2. Actions speak louder than words

ความหมาย การกระทำมีความหมายมากกว่าคำพูด

3. A dime a dozen

ความหมาย ของธรรมดา เรื่องธรรมดาๆ พื้นๆ

ตัวอย่าง Experts in this field are a dime a dozen.

4. Add insult to injury

ความหมาย การกระทำที่ทำให้สถานการณ์ที่เวลาร้ายอยู่แล้ว ยิ่งร้ายไปกว่าเดิม

ตัวอย่าง My car barely started this morning, and to add insult to injury, I got a flat tire in the driveway.

5. All ears

ความหมาย การฟังอย่างตั้งใจ

ตัวอย่าง I’m all ears, tell me what happened with you.

6. Barking up the wrong tree

ความหมาย คิดผิด ถามผิดคน กล่าวหาผิดคน

ตัวอย่าง If you think I’m the guilty person, you’re barking up the wrong tree.

7. Beat around the bush

ความหมาย พูดอ้อมค้อม เลี่ยงประเด็นหลัก

ตัวอย่าง Don’t beat around the bush—just tell me the truth.

8. Bed of roses

ความหมาย สถานการณ์ที่สะดวกสบาย ชีวิตเรียบง่าย สุขสบาย

ตัวอย่าง Who said life would be a bed of roses? If I had a million bucks, I would be in a bed of roses.

9. Best of both worlds

ความหมาย ข้อได้เปรียบของสองอย่างที่ขัดแย้งในเวลาเดียวกัน

ตัวอย่าง She works in the city and lives in the country, so she gets the best of both worlds.

10. Bite off more than you can chew

ความหมาย รับปากทำในสิ่งที่เกินกว่าความสามารถของตัวเอง

ตัวอย่าง I bit off more than I could chew when I volunteered to manage three little league teams in one season.

11. Call it a day

ความหมาย เลิกงาน กลับบ้าน

ตัวอย่าง I’m tired. Let’s call it a day.

12. Can’t judge a book by its cover

ความหมาย อย่าตัดสินอะไรจากภายนอกที่เห็น หรือแปลตรงตัวว่าอย่าตัดสินหนังสือจากหน้าปก

ตัวอย่าง This report may look dull, but don’t judge a book by its cover.

13. Cat nap

ความหมาย งีบหลับในช่วงสั้นๆ

ตัวอย่าง I’m really tired. I need a cat nap right now!

14. Couch potato

ความหมาย คนขี้เกียจ

ตัวอย่าง The only thing you do all day is watch TV. You’ve become a real couch potato, haven’t you?

15. Cry over spilt milk

ความหมาย ไม่มีประโยชน์กับสิ่งที่ผ่านไป หรือสิ่งที่เสียไปแล้ว

ตัวอย่าง Yes, we made a mistake, but there’s no point in crying over spilled milk.

16. Curiosity killed the cat

ความหมาย ความอยากรู้อยากเห็นจนนำไปสู่เหตุร้าย

ตัวอย่าง I know curiosity killed the cat, but I can’t stop the investigation until I know where the donations are really going.
